We will watch a beautiful video now about Michoacán’s special visitors and then answer the following questions..

1. How do you say butterfly in Spanish?

2. Who does the little girl think the butterflies are?

3. How do you say Forrests of central Mexico in Spanish?

4. Why is the journey and arrival of the butterflies so significant, what do they represent in the day of the dead celebrations for the people Michoacán?

Video 2 💀 Los origines del Día de los Muertos

We will watch a parody song about the origins of the day of the dead according to the ancient mexica beliefs about the afterlife. Then we will try and answer the following questions…

1. When is day of the dead celebrated and what items do people bring for the sprits?

2. How many fiestas did the ancient mexica dedicate to the dead?

3. According to the ancient mexica, did how you die affect where you end up for the afterlife?

4. Can you pronounce any of the following lands of the gods?

(More advanced students: can you write down the relevant causes of death)

5. How long does it take to journey to Mitclán? What geographical obstacles might you encounter?

Actividad 3 - Barriletes de Sumpango 🇬🇹

Your teacher will give you a brief history and introduction to this amazing celebration in Guatemala. We can read more about it here:

We will now watch this vlog about the fiesta de barriletes, pausing to ensure everyone is understanding and to discuss.

There should be plenty to discuss about what we have learnt together tonight - Why not create your own design for a barrilete - what causes would you highlight or support? Or would you remember a loved one who has passed?
