On Monday 13 July, a group of Venezuelan women living locally are hosting a fundraising film screening in Bath in support of people affected by the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela.
This event has been organised by Venezuelan members of our Todo el Mundo team, both past and present, who have asked us to help share it with our students and local community. We are very glad to support them by helping to raise awareness of the event and the appeal.
The recent earthquakes in Venezuela have caused heartbreaking loss and destruction. Thousands of people have lost their lives, many more have been injured, and families have been left without homes. The disaster has also hit a country already facing long-term political, economic and humanitarian challenges, where many communities need urgent support with shelter, food, water, healthcare and emergency response.
A Venezuelan film with a local connection
The film being screened is El cine soy yo, a Venezuelan film directed by Luis Armando Roche. Some of our students may remember that Lorena previously wrote about this film for our blog, exploring its cultural background and why it is such an interesting film for Spanish learners.
For anyone learning Spanish, this is also a valuable opportunity to hear Venezuelan Spanish, experience Spanish-language cinema, and learn more about Venezuelan culture, history and identity through film.
After the screening, there will be a conversation with members of the Venezuelan community living in the UK about the current humanitarian situation and the resilience of the Venezuelan people.
